New York—On May 9th, a highly anticipated art event was held in the lobby of Flushing City Hall in New York City. The opening ceremony of Professor Fang Shujiu’s world art tour exhibition, “Inheritance and Transcendence: A Call from the Soul,” was solemnly held. This art exhibition was hosted by the Kowloon Art Research Institute of the United States, the New York Poetry, Painting, Music and Chess Association, and the East-West Art Center of the United States, and co-hosted by the New York Fine Arts Association, the Hong Kong Artists Association, the New York Contemporary Art Group Limited, and the International Foundation for Sustainable Development. Many guests attended the opening ceremony, including New York State Assemblyman Kim Tae-seok, Chairman of the New York State Assembly’s Arts and Sports Development Committee, and advisor Yang Ailun.
This exhibition presents the work of an art master who has received collective recognition from the international art system. At the opening ceremony, the organizers systematically presented Fang Shujiu’s status and recognition in multiple fields, including international politics, academia, and culture. Former US President Reagan, the King of Thailand, and former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, among other political and business figures from various countries, have collected Fang Shujiu’s works. Art critics at the scene pointed out that this official collection across different countries and political systems reflects the artist’s special status in international cultural diplomacy. Political figures’ collecting decisions often transcend personal aesthetic preferences, representing national-level cultural recognition.
A particular work presented at the exhibition attracted considerable attention—portraits by Fang Shujiu of President Kennedy’s granddaughter and nephew. The Kennedy family represents power and social status in American history. An artist’s selection by the Kennedy family to create portraits of their private members demonstrates the trust and recognition he has gained within the American elite. This private commission represents the ultimate affirmation of the artist’s status and artistic merit. Art figures from Hong Kong and Singapore at the event stated that such connections with powerful families are a significant indicator of an artist’s international standing. A senior Hong Kong collector, after viewing the work, remarked: “The brushstrokes in the portrait are precise and powerful, retaining the solemnity of traditional portraiture while incorporating the expressiveness of modern art. No wonder it won the favor of the Kennedy family.”
Another important piece of information revealed at the opening ceremony was that Fang Shujiu’s works have been invited to exhibitions free of charge by the United Nations on multiple occasions, the longest lasting over 20 days, and are permanently housed in the UN Secretariat, receiving formal recognition from several then-UN Under-Secretaries-General and high-ranking officials. The United Nations’ decisions on art collection often represent a collective statement on international politics and culture. When an artist’s work is permanently collected by its headquarters, it transcends the realm of artistic aesthetics, becoming a global affirmation of the artist’s cultural value.
What most attracted the attention of academics present was the status of Fang Shujiu’s work within the global academic system. In 2016, Columbia University held an “International Academic Symposium on Fang Shujiu’s Works,” connecting over sixty top universities worldwide, including Harvard, Yale, Oxford, and Cambridge, through a global network. This signifies that Fang Shujiu’s work has been included in the permanent research of the world’s highest-level academic institutions. A museum representative at the event stated that this academic recognition provides the artist’s work with a permanent historical record. “The fact that it has received such widespread academic attention demonstrates that Fang Shujiu’s art has transcended geographical and temporal limitations, possessing universal cultural value.”
The exhibition systematically presented Fang Shujiu’s official status and honors. In May 2021, he was specially appointed as a “Chinese State Gift Artist” and a “National First-Class Artist,” and was also appointed as a visiting professor at the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University. Zhou Tienong, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, personally met with him and wrote an inscription to congratulate him, praising him as an “artist with profound thoughts.” This recognition signifies that his works have been officially recognized as representing the highest level of Chinese cultural export.
In terms of artistic innovation, Fang Shujiu’s representative works particularly attracted the attention of art critics at the exhibition. His Dragon Horse series draws inspiration from the soaring imagery of dragons, blending traditional brushwork with Western modeling to form a unique artistic language. Unlike Xu Beihong’s “Galloping Horses,” which emphasize the spirit and temperament of the horse, Fang Shujiu creates a visual impact of “Dragon Horses Flying to the Sky” through the combination of dragons and horses. This allows his works to both inherit the charm of traditional Chinese art and achieve innovative breakthroughs in the contemporary context. This new creative approach, which differs from the realism of traditional horse paintings and the spiritual symbolism of Xu Beihong’s “Galloping Horses,” has been praised by art critics as filling an important gap in contemporary Chinese horse painting.
The works related to the “Hundred Horses Stele Corridor” and the large-scale creations such as “Dragon Soaring, Tiger Leaping, and Galloping Horses” exhibited in the exhibition fully demonstrate the completion and strength of this artistic innovation. A curator specializing in art criticism remarked after viewing the exhibition: “The horses in these works are not merely animal forms, but imbued with spiritual connotations. The brushwork is fluid and powerful, and the color combinations are both bold and harmonious, revealing the depth of the artist’s fifty years of creative accumulation.” Another critic, who has long focused on contemporary Chinese art, pointed out: “Fang Shujiu’s innovation lies in his not simply inheriting tradition, but rather integrating contemporary visual language and international artistic thinking based on an understanding of the essence of tradition. This is precisely the path that contemporary artists should take.” The
work that lingered the longest in the exhibition hall was the large-scale piece “Ten Thousand Horses Galloping to Welcome a Prosperous Age.” Dozens of visitors gathered in front of the painting, carefully observing the layering of brushstrokes and the use of color. An art enthusiast from Singapore remarked, “I was struck by the dynamism. The horses in the painting seem to be galloping right before my eyes, their manes fluttering in the wind; the whole scene is brimming with vitality. This isn’t just a display of technique, but an expression of the artist’s spirit of the times.”
Art critics pointed out that the recognition Fang Shujiu has garnered—from the political sphere, powerful families, international organizations, academic systems, and official institutions—forms a rare and comprehensive system of affirmation in the contemporary art world. This recognition transcends East and West, integrates politics and academia, and connects multiple national cultural systems, collectively providing multi-dimensional proof of the artist’s international standing.
Important information was announced at the exhibition: the Fang Shujiu Art World Tour will tour Hong Kong in the second half of 2026. This arrangement aims to give more Asian audiences and art professionals the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the artist’s work. Hong Kong, as a major cultural exchange center in Asia, will provide a platform for the dissemination of Fang Shujiu’s art throughout Asia. Art critics at the event believed that this tour is of great significance in promoting dialogue between Chinese and Western art and enhancing the international perspective of Asian art.
Art critics and curators from Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, and China at the event stated that Fang Shujiu’s works not only inherit the spirit of traditional Chinese art but also gain widespread academic and political recognition on the international stage. This inclusive artistic practice provides an important reference for contemporary artists on how to build cultural confidence in a globalized context.
